Types of Casinos in Rhode Island

The only types of casinos in Rhode Island are the state’s two pari-mutuel facilities which both feature video lottery terminals (VLT’s). These machines are the same as regular video gaming devices but are called lottery terminals because they are regulated by the state’s lottery commission which receives a share of each machine’s revenue. The machines at these two Rhode Island casinos accept cash but don’t pay out in cash; instead, they print out a receipt which must be taken to a cashier.

All VLT’s are programmed to play at least six different games: blackjack, keno, slots and three versions of poker (jacks or better, joker poker and deuces wild).

Twin River Casino offers live table games, but Newport Grand Casino does not. However, the owners of Newport Grand are building a new casino in Tiverton, just off of Route 24 and conveniently located close to Southeastern Massachusetts near the current Newport Grand location. This new facility will offer slots, as well as table games. That new casino is expected to open in mid-2018 and it will replace Newport Grand which would then close. The Tiverton Casino Hotel property will feature an 84-room hotel, 32 table games and up to 1,000 slot machines.

The rules for how old you must be to gamble are the same for both casinos in Rhode Island, so the Twin River casino age as well as the age to play at Newport Grand is 18.
